In 1974, radio broadcaster, oral historian and all-around FASCINATING person Studs Terkel collected interviews of folks from all walks of life in the American work-force. The results were an extraordinary tapestry of working, living and striving in America. So powerful was Terkel's work that just four years later composer Stephen Schwartz (WICKED, PIPPIN), folk legend James Taylor and several other composers set the lives and struggles of some of Terkel's interviewees to music. The result is this rock, folk and jazz-infused portrait of life in the American work-force entitled, WORKING. Thirty years after the original production, Terkel conducted additional interviews and composers (including Lin-Manuel Miranda (HAMILTON, IN THE HEIGHTS)) crafted additional material for a re-vamped production in 2012. We are thrilled to offer this updated musical tribute to the lives and longings of the American worker.
